September 2009
Welcome to all new and returning UCLA students!
We hope you all have a chance to visit our office, stop by our big blue tent or see us at the Enormous Activities Fair. We just want to give you a bit of information to help you get going for the school year.
If you are living in a triple, you can check out a mini-hub (splitter) that will allow you to connect multiple computers to one Ethernet port in your room. Stop by the big blue tent right outside Covel for this.
UCLA Residential Wireless Updates
STC would like to give you a brief overview of the wireless network in the residence halls. Within the residence halls, there are three new wireless networks.
UCLA_RES: Open network available to registered computers. UCLA_SECURE_RES: Secure network available to registered computers that requires WPA2 authentication. UCLA_WEB_RES: Open network for web and secure web-only traffic available to non-registered computers (i.e. guests, visitors, etc).
The new 802.11n networks will be Wireless-N capable; if you have an N-capable wireless card you will experience much faster speeds than we provided previously. All students should also find a more reliable connection using the new UCLA residential wireless networks.
The following locations currently have wireless connectivity using UCLA_RES, UCLA_SECURE_RES, & UCLA_WEB_RES:
- De Neve A-F
- Dykstra Hall
- Hitch Hall
- Saxon Hall
- Sproul Hall
All other building will only have these wireless networks in the Common/Floor Lounge Areas:
- Canyon Point
- Courtside
- Delta Terrace
- Hedrick Hall
- Hedrick Summit
- Rieber Terrace
- Rieber Vista
Please note that if you have a personal wireless router in your room, the implementation of these wireless networks may impact your ability to connect to your wireless router as there will be increased signal interference. We recommend that, unless necessary, you disable your personal wireless router and use the residential wireless networks.
