An explosion is a sudden and violent release of mechanical, chemical or nuclear energy in a sudden and often violent manner with the generation of high temperature and usually with the release of gases. Explosions can cause injuries, death and extensive property and infrastructural damage.
Explosions are uncommon in the Los Angeles area.
Explosions can be followed by fires. It is important to distance oneself from the area hit by an explosion due to the possibility of more explosions.
What to do if there is an explosion without a following fire:
- Take shelter against your desk or a sturdy table.
- Exit the building immediately.
- Do not use the elevators; use the stairs.
- Check for fire and other hazards.
- Take your emergency supply kit with you.
- Move to a wide open expanse such as the Intramural field by Drake Stadium, Wilson Plaza (or the Veteran’s Cemetery if you happen to be in Westwood or in the Warren Hall area).
- If you have sustained injuries, if you are capable, please transport yourself to the nearest hospital, or call 9-1-1 for emergency assistance.
If there is a fire following the explosion:
- Exit the building immediately.
- Make sure your head is below any smoke. If you have to crawl below the smoke line, do so.
- Use a wet cloth, if possible, to cover your nose and mouth.
