Computer Registration
In our quest to offer you uninterrupted and high-quality network service, UCLA On-Campus Housing uses a computer registration system. This system verifies your UCLA affiliation and installs a client program which is necessary for network access. The program will check your operating system patches and service pack levels as well as verify the existence and status of anti-virus software. The installation of ongoing critical updates is required for residential computers to access the Internet for On-campus housing and Weyburn Terrace.
With the increasing quantity and severity of viruses, spyware and Internet worms the need to quickly identify infected computers has become one of our main security concerns. The registration process will allow us to identify and notify the owners of infected computers so that we can assist the owner in removing the infected files before it can affect other users on the Residential Network. Also, it will allow us to identify computer users that may be violating the Acceptable Use Policy.
Anti-virus software is a requirement for any computer connected to the UCLA Residential Network. On-Campus Housing provides Sophos Anti-virus, which is pre-configured for optimal protection and does not require any user intervention. (You may also chose to use your own anti-virus software.) You will have the opportunity to install Sophos during the registration process. A client program is also installed on your computer that ensures that your anti-virus software and patch updates are intact and operating properly. If your anti-virus software or client program is removed or disabled, your internet connection will be restricted until the programs are re-installed.
Register a computer
Computer registration can be automatically done when residents plug in their computer with a network cable in their room, open a web browser and follow the on-screen instructions (assuming network configuration settings are set to default Windows settings). Follow these simple steps to register the computer and get connected to the UCLA Residential Network. This should take less than 30 minutes for you to complete:
- Configure the computer to automatically obtain an IP address.
- Connect the computer to the network port in your room using a network cable (alternatively, you can connect to the UCLA public wireless network if it is available in your area).
- Open a web browser.
- The Resnet Registration page will be presented.
- Follow the instructions on the page.
- You will be granted immediate access to the Internet once completed.
Register other devices
If you are using a Wireless router, you will not need to re-register it as before. However, you will need to reconfigure the wireless router to be used in Bridged or Access Point mode in order to further protect the security and integrity of the network. The difference between Bridged/Access Point and the standard router is disabling the DHCP server feature. You may reconfigure your wireless router at any time before registering your computer.
Gaming consoles, TiVo or other wireless devices will no longer require separate registration and are welcome to be used on the Residential Network.
Technical Support Staff from the UCLA Student Technology Center will be available to assist you with any issues you may encounter, or to assist with reconfiguring your wireless router.
Acceptable Use Policy
Please be aware that by using the UCLA Residential Network you are agreeing to the UCLA Acceptable Use Policy. Please see the link to the right for more details on the policy.
