Policy Key & Security on the UCLA Residential Network

UCLA Policy Key

The Policy Key is a mandatory client that installs on your computer. This client assists in the registration of computers for use on the UCLA Residential Network. It will monitor your anti-virus and operating system to ensure that you have the latest updates, patches and service packs and will report to you and to Student Technology Center (STC) that you are or are not in compliance.

Failure of the Policy Key to report back to STC will result in restricted access to the Residential Network. Failure of policy key to be installed on your computer will result in you not being able to connect to the Residential Network.

The Policy Key is not spyware. We only monitor the anti-virus and operating system for updates; we cannot view or access any additional components on your computer.

Security on the Residential Network

With the increasing quantity and severity of viruses, spyware and Internet worms the need to quickly identify infected computers has become one of our main security concerns. The registration process will allow us to identify and notify the owners of infected computers so that we can assist the owner in removing the infection before it can affect other users on the Residential Network. It also will allow us to identify computer users that may be violating the Acceptable Use Policy.

Anti-virus software is a requirement on any computer connected to the UCLA Residential Network. On-Campus Housing provides Sophos Anti-virus, which is pre-configured for optimal protection and does not require any user intervention. You may also chose to use your own anti-virus software. You will have the opportunity to install Sophos during the registration process if you choose. If your anti-virus software or client program is removed or disabled, your Internet connection will be restricted until the programs are re-installed.

All Microsoft Windows

To ensure compliance with the above policies, all users with Microsoft Windows will be required to install the Policy Key. This program checks the status of the installed anti-virus program, confirms that the definition files are current, verifies that "Real-time Scanning" is enabled, and enables "Automatic Updates".

Here is a partial list of the anti-virus programs that can be verified by the Policy Key.

  • Sophos Anti-Virus (version 5.0)
  • McAfee Virus Scan (Personal Edition version 10 / 2006)
  • Norton Internet Security (version 2005)
  • Kaspersky Anti-Virus (Personal Edition version 5.0.383)
  • AVG Anti-Virus (version 7.0 build 344)
  • Panda Titanium Anti-Virus 2005 (version 4.02)
  • Panda Platinum Internet Security 2005 (version 5)
  • AntiVir Anti-Virus (version 6.31)
  • F-Prot Anti-Virus (version 3.16c)
  • eAccelerator StopSign Anti-Virus (Registered version only)

Mac

Mac users are required to install the Policy Key and Sophos anti-virus or an anti-virus of their choice.

Linux

Linux users must install and maintain an anti-virus of their choice (Sophos is recommended). The Policy Key is not yet available for these operating systems so compliance will be based on passive monitoring. All users will need to Log In each time they access their web browser.

Windows 2000, Millennium Edition and 98 and other Operating Systems

We no longer support versions of Windows prior to XP or other operating systems. Although we can provide best effort support be aware they fall outside of our standard supported operating systems.
