Routers & Access Points

Connecting Routers and Access Points

Students can use their own wireless router or access point in the residence halls. Please note that in order to use the wireless router in the residence halls, it must be configured in Bridged or Access Point mode. For instructions on how to do this, see below.

If you intend to use a router (wired or wireless) or a wireless access point in the residential room or suite, you must read and understand the following policies pertaining to use of wireless access points and routers in the residence halls.

  • You will be held responsible for all data being transmitted and received through the router/wireless access point. Students will be held responsible for setting up adequate security measures on their device(s) to ensure that other unauthorized users are unable to utilize the device to connect to the internet.
  • If your router/wireless access point has been identified in conducting activity in violation of the UCLA Housing Acceptable Use Policy or the University of California Electronic Communications Policy, you will be held liable and responsible for such electronic transmissions.
  • Most wireless access points (and wireless routers) have two common methods of security to prevent authorized wireless devices from connecting to and utilizing your wireless access point. These include:
    • Data Encryption (i.e. WEP or Wired Equivalent Privacy, WPA or Wi-Fi Protected Access)
    • Wireless Device Access Lists (i.e. MAC or Medium Access Control filtering)
    • Consult the instructions manual provided with the wireless router/wireless access point for details on setting up these types of security features.

Also, you may go to the link at the right Configure Wireless Router to get instructions on how to configure your router as an access point.  Please contact the STC for any further questions.

Acceptable Use Policy

Please be aware that by using the UCLA Residential Network you are agreeing to the UCLA Acceptable Use Policy. Please see the link to the right for more details on the policy.
