Parking Structure 8

We have been actively planning the multi-faceted, and sometimes simultaneous, seismic repairs needed in Parking Structures 8 and CHS to prolong the life of both structures, and the construction phase is now underway.

Parking Structure 8 (PS-8), repair work consists of the PS-8 Ramp Repair and PS-8 Carbon Fiber Wrapping projects. For PS-8 Ramp Repair, construction began in June 2009. While the project entails completely closing portions of the ramp for extended periods of time, access to all levels of the parking structure will be maintained throughout the entire construction period.

We are currently in Phase 2, which means the Westwood Plaza side of the ramp is closed for construction, with two-way traffic flow on the newly-repaired Gayley Avenue side. With no entry/exit from Westwood Plaza:

  • For access to Levels 1 & 2, use Strathmore St.
  • For access to Levels 3 & 4, use Charles E. Young Drive West

The PS-8 Carbon Fiber Wrapping project involves putting carbon fiber cloth-like material with an epoxy resin on all columns throughout Structure 8 to enhance the structural integrity of the facility. The work will be done in four phases, from August 2009 through December 2009.

In the CHS area of campus, Tiverton Drive will be severely impacted by construction. For the duration of the project, Tiverton will remain open northbound from Le Conte Avenue to Charles E. Young Drive (CEY) South. Southbound traffic on Tiverton from CEY South will end at the entrance to Parking Structure E, Level B. As with the Parking Structures 8 Ramp project, specific traffic notifications will be distributed prior to the start of this construction.
