Wired & Wireless Access

Wired Access

The UCLA residence halls have network ports available in each room from which residents can get Internet access. Once a student registers their computer with the Student Technology Center (STC) they will never need to login and have open access as long as their computer continues to comply with policy requirements.

If you have more devices than available network ports in your room, you can use a wired or wireless router to increase access and ports. If you use a wireless router, you will need to configure it for Bridged or Access Point mode. Additionally, STC checks out wired routers for students in triple occupancy rooms to use in their residence hall during the school year.

Wireless Access

Public Areas

In all public areas such as resident hall lobbies, lounges, conference rooms and study halls, and some resident hall rooms/suites, you will have available the UCLA public network (UCLAWLAN). Connect to this network and open a browser. This network will be available for web and secure web-only browsing traffic.

This wireless network is available for users with a computer and their own 802.11b compliant wireless network interface card. For requirements and configuration please go to: www.bol.ucla.edu/services/wireless

For wireless coverage areas on other parts of campus, please go to: www.bol.ucla.edu/services/wireless/coverage

Residence Hall Rooms

Within the residence halls, there will be three new wireless networks.

UCLA_RES: Open network available to registered computers.
UCLA_SECURE_RES: Secure network available to registered computers that requires WPA2 authentication.
UCLA_WEB_RES: Open network for web and secure web-only traffic available to non-registered computers (i.e. guests, visitors, etc).

The new networks are Wireless-N capable, so if you have an N-capable wireless card you will experience much faster speeds and all students should find a more reliable connection using the UCLA wireless networks. These networks will be rolled out to other residence halls throughout the coming academic year. We will notify you of any upcoming changes in our Latest News & Updates page.

The following locations currently have wireless connectivity using UCLA_RES, UCLA_SECURE_RES, & UCLA_WEB_RES:

  • DeNeve A-F
  • Dykstra Hall
  • Hitch Hall
  • Saxon Hall
  • Sproul Hall

All other building will only have these wireless networks in the Common/Floor Lounge Areas:

  • Canyon Point
  • Courtside
  • Delta Terrace
  • Hedrick Hall
  • Hedrick Summit
  • Rieber Terrace
  • Rieber Vista

For information on how to configure your laptop to connect to the secure wireless network, UCLA_SECURE_RES, with WPA2 authentication, please see the related links to the right.

Wired Versus Wireless

The wireless network is not meant to replace the wired network, rather it is provided as a convenience and provides overlay with the wired network. STC recommends students use a wired connection when possible as it provides a faster, more reliable and secure connection than a wireless connection.

If you have a personal wireless router in your room, the implementation of the residential wireless networks may impact your ability to connect to your wireless router as there will be increased signal interference. We recommend that, unless necessary, you disable your personal wireless router and use the residential wireless networks.

Also, if you are connected using your wired connection, then please disable your wireless card to avoid conflicts.

Acceptable Use Policy

Please be aware that by using the UCLA Residential Network you are agreeing to the UCLA Acceptable Use Policy. Please see the link to the right for more details on the policy.
