Thank you for your interest in Environment, Health and Safety's classroom training schedule. Listed below are regularly-scheduled sessions, open to all UCLA students, faculty and staff. Please consult with your supervisor to determine which sessions are required for your specific job duties.

Important Registration Instructions

To register for training or for general information, please email training@ehs.ucla.edu at least two (2) business days prior to the beginning of the session. Be sure to provide all of the following information: 

  • First and Last Name
  • UCLA identification number (9-digit)
  • Email address
  • Phone number
  • Department name
  • Principal Investigator's (PI) full name
  • Lab address (bldg./rm.)
  • Lab extension (5-digit)
  • Names of training classes
  • Dates requested

Please be sure to bring a pen or pencil and arrive a few minutes early.  The regulatory requirements of the material covered in the training require you to be present for the entire session.  Late arrivals may not be able to participate and will be asked to reschedule.

Training Completion Notification

Training completion confirmation emails are sent to individual learners upon verification of rosters within three business days. If you require documentation of training completion as a prerequisite for external inspections or other training courses prior to the 3-day turnaround, please contact training@ehs.ucla.edu to make special arrangements.

Biosafety Training

Biological Safety Cabinet (BSC)

Required for personnel using, purchasing, working with infectious materials under Biosafety Level 2 or higher (including materials under the Bloodborne Pathogens Standard), working with animals requiring biocontainment housing, or other research related projects involving the use of BSCs. Must be taken by first-time BSC users and is required every 3 years and as needed.

Biosafety Level 2 with Biosafety Level 3 practices (BSL2+)

Required prior to working with recombinant DNA, infectious materials, animal experiments requiring BSL2+ housing, and other research-related projects that involve BSL2+ containment practices and facility. BSL2+ is offered immediately at the close of every BSL2 session and lasts for approximately 30 minutes.  Be sure to specify interest in BSL2+ when registering for BSL2 training. Prerequisite: BSL2. At a minimum, must be taken every 3 years and as needed.

Biosafety Level 3 (BSL3)

Required prior to beginning of work for all lab workers working in a Biosafety Level 3 laboratory and annually thereafter. Contact EH&S Biosafety at biosafety@ehs.ucla.edu to schedule training. 

 

Medical Waste Management (MWM)

Required within 90 days beginning of work for personnel handling or disposing of materials as medical waste (biohazard, trace chemo waste, pathology waste, etc.), handling or disposing of animals and/or animal tissues as medical waste, and other research related projects that involves generating, handling, storage and/or transport of medical waste. At a minimum, must be taken within 90 days from start of employment and 3 years thereafter and as needed.

Bloodborne Pathogens (BBP)

Required prior to beginning of work for personnel working with clinical specimens such as blood, human body fluids, tissue, and potentially infectious human cell lines (including  primary cell culture and cell lines known or likely to be infected with HIV, Hepatitis B, or Hepatitis C). This training applies for personnel when there is a potential occupational exposure or contact to blood, blood products, or other potentially infectious materials. Initial training must be taken in classroom. Refresher training (minimum annually) may be completed at UCLA Training Portal.

Shipping Biological Materials

This training is required prior to packaging and/or shipping biological or infectious substances for diagnostic or investigational purposes. This is an online course approximately 3 hours in length (completed at the user's own pace). Cost: $95. Prerequisite: Bloodborne Pathogens. This training is required every 2 years. Carcinogen or Highly Toxic Chemical Use in Animal or Animal Tissue Training

Required prior to beginning work for those working with carcinogens or highly toxic chemicals involving animal experiments. To fulfill this training requirement, please register for the Laboratory Safety Fundamental Concepts class (see below) and email laboratorysafety@ehs.ucla.edu to see if additional training is needed depending on your research.

Ergonomics

Office Ergonomics training is available by departmental request. Stay tuned for quarterly Campus Ergonomics Program Advocate training, which will prepare someone in your department to coordinate ergonomic evaluations and manage basic ergonomic risks. Fire Extinguisher Hands-on Training

Fire Extinguishers are only valuable safety devices when you know how to use them. At this hands-on session, participants will learn the types of extinguishers found on campus; how to select the appropriate extinguisher; the PASS method of fire extinguisher operation; and what to do in the event of a fire. Participants will have the opportunity to extinguish a live fire. Please read the Fire Extinguisher Training article for more information on how to register for this class.

Hazardous Chemical Waste Training 

This class provides an overview of how to handle and dispose of hazardous chemical waste using the Online Tag Program. Required for workers handling hazardous chemical waste in a non-lab environment (e.g., shops). Note: This training is a component of the Laboratory Safety Fundamental Concepts (LSFC) course listed below. If you need LSFC training, you do not need to enroll in Hazardous Chemical Waste training separately.

Laboratory Safety

Laboratory Safety Fundamental Concepts (LSFC)

This class will provide an overview of laboratory safety requirements, and is required by all laboratory personnel. Topics of discussion include: the recognition and mitigation of laboratory hazards; the use of engineering controls, administrative controls and personal protective equipment; working safety with chemicals, the use of MSDSs, procedures for disposing of hazardous chemical waste, and fire safety precautions for the laboratory. Required annually for all laboratory employees and student workers in laboratories.

Laboratory Safety for Principal Investigators and Laboratory Supervisors

This 90-minute session is designed for Principal Investigators (PIs) and leaders responsible for implementing a laboratory safety plan. Materials covered include: an overview of research safety responsibilities, Cal/OSHA regulations, and an abbreviated version of the Lab Safety Fundamental Concepts class. Required for all laboratory Principal Investigators.

Radiation Safety  

Laser Safety Training

This class provides campus personnel with a brief introduction to laser technology and an overview of the requirements for safe operation of laser equipment within the UCLA classroom, laboratory and research environments. Topics include personal and departmental responsibilities, laser classification, laser controls and safety equipment, hazards associated with laser use and continuing training requirements. Participants complete an exam following a lecture presented by EH&S Laser Safety staff. Required for all personnel operating or working with Class 3B and Class 4 lasers and recommended for all campus laser users. At a minimum, retraining is required every two years and as needed.

New Radiation Worker Qualification

This session is designed to educate personnel on proper work procedures and safety guidelines for work with radioisotopes in a research or clinical environment. Participants complete an exam following a lecture presented by EH&S Radiation Safety staff. Must be taken by first-time radiation workers. At a minimum, refresher training is required annually and as needed.
