Fire Safety
Fire Extinguisher Hands-on Training
Fire Extinguishers are only valuable safety devices when you know how to use them. At this hands-on session, participants will learn the types of extinguishers found on campus; how to select the appropriate extinguisher; the PASS method of fire extinguisher operation; and what to do in the event of a fire. Participants will have the opportunity to extinguish a live fire. Typically classes last approximately one hour and are held at the Sunset Recreation Facility. Fire Extinguisher Hands-on Training is available by departmental request only.
How to Request a Hands-on Fire Extinguisher Class for your Department:
Submit a Facilities Service Request (FSR) to request fire extinguisher delivery to sunset Recreation. Include the number of people to be trained, and the date and time of the training.
Submit a Recharge Order Request (ROR) to Sunset Recreation for the use of the facility ($14).
The day before, confirm attendance with EH&S Training by calling (310) 794-5328.
Class size is limited to 8-20 people (exceptions may be granted).

Laboratory Safety Orientation
Laboratory Safety Orientation introduces new graduate students to basic safety and regulatory issues related to activities conducted in the laboratory. The format allows employees to complete the most basic and critical EH&S laboratory training at the very beginning of their appointments. Session includes completion of Laboratory Safety: Fundamental Concepts, Hazardous Chemical Waste, and Fire Safety and Extinguisher Training. Contact the EH&S training coordinator (4-5669) for scheduling for more than 15 people.
If you were unable to attend a Lab Safety Orientation session at the beginning of the quarter, please register for the following classroom courses: Lab Safety: Fundamental Concepts, Hazardous Chemical Waste Training. Additionally, please complete the Fire Safety Online Training, which is available in the Online Training Modules and can be found in the Related Information.
