Types of batteries include but are not limited to: Alkaline Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) Nickel-Cadmium (NiCad) Lithium "Sealed" Lead-Acid Carbon Zinc Carbon Chloride Mercury UCLA's Office of Refuse and Recycling has set up a program to collect these batteries for proper recycling or disposal. Special collection containers are available. Contact the office of Refuse and Recycling for disposal options or to get a collection container for your area. Batteries are also collected at the Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S) hazardous waste pickups. A UCLA Hazardous Waste Tag is not needed for batteries because they are managed as "Universal Waste". If any batteries are leaking, be sure to properly contain them in a clear plastic bag or other suitable container to minimize contamination. Be aware that some electronic devices contain batteries (laptops, cell phones, UPS, etc). If you plan to dispose of the electronic device, you can just leave the batteries in it. You can then dispose of the item as Universal waste. Batteries should only be removed if the item is going to be used again for its intended purpose.
