Form 990: Return of Organization Exempt From Income Tax

Published: 2010.03.12

Purpose
Form 990 is used by tax-exempt organizations, nonexempt charitable trusts and section 527 political organizations to report income and calculate taxes owed to the federal government.

Form 990 is an information return that Internal Revenue Code (IRC) Section 501(c)(3) organizations are generally required to file with the Internal Revenue Service on an annual basis. Such returns must also be made available to the public upon request.

Exceptions
However, IRC Section 115 organizations are not required to file a Form 990. Since the University of California is both an IRC Section 115 and IRC Section 501(c)(3) organization, by law, the University is not required to file Form 990. Therefore, we are unable to provide a Form 990 to those individuals or agencies that request it.

Please see the University of California's IRS Determination Letter (PDF), which confirms the University's exemption from filing an annual Form 990.
