The Vision Use Vignette Software tools to implement a campuswide portal and content management system — one that provides timely and accurate information to a wide-spread audience including faculty, students, staff, alumni, visitors and patrons. Original Portal Project Goals The new Vignette software tools were to be used to accomplish several important goals. Consolidate current distributed web investments on campus - Develop a navigation structure that is subject-based as opposed to an organization-based
- Distribute the work of creating and maintaining content to non-technical content owners
- Share writing and publishing standards across all content published
Provide site visitors with a standard, consistent, and timely presentation of content Provide "How to" information about common business processes Create a site uniformly accessible to persons with disabilities Develop new applications within the portal context applying single sign-on Enable personalization of content Project Goals Fulfilled A review of the production site shows how most of the above goals have been achieved. The well known gateway header and footer was adopted for all pages Navigation channels appear on the left and are limited to only three levels with no mouse-overs Landing pages and article pages follow a common format across all navigation channels The dynamic breadcrumb helps readers easily navigate between articles and channels Feedback button offers readers an opportunity to ask questions and offer comments Printer-friendly versions are available for all articles How-to articles, FAQs, contact information and other resources are now been made available Unique article ids used to easily reference content on printed materials Special dash-board pages consolidate information for by job title, audience, etc. Redundancy minimized across the site by linking content created by subject matter experts The Google search engine delivers results for all the portal and other UCLA sites Easy-to-use Vignette text editor allows non-technical people to create and keep content fresh without knowing HTML Writing and editing standards appear in a easy-to-use Portal Toolkit Roles and Responsibilities on the Portal Project
